WHEREAS, Cancer is a group of diseases charocterized by uncontrolled growth and spread
of abnormal cells which, if not controllec1- can result in premature death; anc1-
WHEREAS, Cancer is predicted to strike one out of every three Americans sometime in
their lifetime and in Florida an estimated 100JX}(} new cases of cancer were
diagnosed in 2009,' anc1-
WHEREAS, approximately 8,230 new cases of cancer are estimated to have occurred in our
area in 2009, and devastatingly 20,680 Florida citizens are expected to lose their
battle with cancer this year,' anc1-
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society is the nations largest and most respected voluntary
voluntary health organization and since 1913 has funded research which has
contributed to every known method for detecting cancer and techniques for treating
cancer: thereby increasing the cancer survival rates from 10% to over 65%; anc1-
WHEREAS, the color purple is the signature color of the American Cancer Society's Relay For
Life events signifying the passion that cancer survivors and their families and loved
ones feel for the eradication of this disease,' anct
WHEREAS, the RELA Y FOR LIFE event financially benefits the American Cancer Societys
research and patient support programs, and educationally benefits our local citizens;

WHEREAS, the Americon Cancer Societys Relay For Life in Golden Gote is a community event
that allows an opportunity to network with businesses, associates, family and
friends, with the same goal of making a difference in the battle against cancer;

WHEREAS, part of the recognition of the Relay For Life event is the "Purple Ribbon Campaign"
to show our support to those individuals living with cancer and honor those individuals
that have lost their lives to the dreaded disease.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that April 10, 2010 be designated as
PAINT OUR TOWN PURPLE DA Y
and also recognize May 1st and Z'd as RELA Y FOR LIFE DA YS in Golden
Gate City. We further urge all citizens to recognize and participate in this
anticancer campaign held in our community.
