PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, the devastating event of an earthquake in Haiti put a nation of
people at the mercy of a national disaster that resulted in an
unprecedented level of misery on this island nation; and,
WHEREAS, in Southwest Florida there is an ever-growing community of
Haitian people who still hold strong to their national heritage and
when faced with the crisis in their native country reacted to
provide support in many different ways; and,
WHEREAS, the Haitian Community of Southwest Florida takes pride in
celebrating Haiti Independence Day to commemorate their fallen
heroes; and,
WHEREAS, the goal of the Haitian Historical Academy is to preserve and
promote the Haitian heritage throughout Collier County to
enhance diversity and cross- cultural understanding by providing
outreach and educational programs; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of the Haitian Historical Academy is to encourage a
multi- ethnic participation for the Haitian Flag Day and to
promote interaction within the various culhral societies to help
build bridges throughout Naples and Fort Myers by way of
concerts, conferences, seminars, public forums, lectures, and
events related to Haitian and American History.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of
Collier County, Florida, that May 16, 2010 is a day to
remember the adversity currently facing the Haiti people by
recognizing
HA1'TIAN FLAG DAY
