PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, in January each year, thousands of Purple Martins will return from
their winter home in Brazil; and,
WHEREAS, these birds wJ1J be searching for suitable housing to nest and rear
their young,' and,
WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature has designated Collier County the PURPLE
MARTIN CAPITAL OF FLORIDA; and,
WHEREAS, the Purple Martin Society of Collier County urges homeowners to
erect housing for the Purple Martins on their property as they have
become dependent on humans for their nesting; and,
WHEREAS, the Purple Martin Society of Collier County wants to alert the public
to the value of these birds in helping diminish the insect population;
and,
WHEREAS, Collier County urges all citizens to join with the Purple Martin Society
of Collier County to show appreciation for these special birds, learn
how to protect them, and encourage propagation in order to maintain
and preserve this species.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of
Collier County, Florida, that January 18-24 be designated as
PVRPLE MARTIN WEEK
