PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the year -round mix of professional, amateur, and recreational sporting activities
makes Florida the leader in sports destinations worldwide, accounting for more
than $32 billion in direct economic impact in the State; and;
WHEREAS, Collier County is fast becoming a premier sports travel and tourism destination
supporting the vital interests of our community by contributing jobs, economic
prosperity, sportsmanship, understanding and goodwill, and
WHEREAS, over 100,000 sports travelers and visitors contributed nearly $2.5 million dollars
to the economy of Collier County in 2009; and,
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the citizens in Collier County to inform them of the
direct and indirect benefits of sports travel and event - related tourism, and
WHEREAS, in light of Collier County's outstanding parks and sporting facilities, beaches,
golf, shopping, restaurants, and natural, historic and cultural activities, sports
travel and event - related tourism is becoming an increasingly important aspect in
the lives of our citizens; and,
WHEREAS, given the contributions of sports travel and event - related tourism to the
economic, social and cultural well being of the citizens of Collier County, it is
fitting that we recognize the importance of sports travel and event - related
tourism to our community; and,
WHEREAS, among Native Americans, there were many versions of what we now call
lacrosse. The Six Tribes of the Iroquois, in what is now southern Ontario and
upstate New York, called their version of the game 'baggatoway" or
"tewaraathon ",' and
WHEREAS, the sport of Lacrosse is now the fastest growing sport in the United States, the
State of Florida, and Collier County, it is fitting that we recognize two upcoming
Lacrosse events being hosted here in Collier County; the Annual Intercollegiate
Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Conference, November 15 -19, 2010 at
the Ritz - Carlton 6o/f Resort, and the Deseers Presidents Cup Girls' Lacrosse
Showcase National Tournament November 20 -21, 2010 at North Collier Regional
Park.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that November 15 - 21, 2010, be designated as
LACROSSE WEEK IN COLLIER COUNTY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 9th Day of November, 2010.
