PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, September is Hunger Action Month nationwide, with September 13, 2018, designated
as Hunger Action Day; and,
WHEREAS, Hunger Action Month is a hunger awareness campaign started by the Feeding America
network of food banks, which includes the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest
Florida; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County is one of five Southwest Florida counties the Harry Chapin Food Bank
serves; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County has approximately 37,000 people who are food insecure, which means
they may not know where their next meal is coming from, according to Feeding
America's 2017 Map the Meal Gap study; and,
WHEREAS, approximately 12,400 of those 37,000 people are children; and,
WHEREAS, the Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed nearly 5.1 million pounds of food in Collier
County in the last fiscal year, a 6 percent increase over the year before; and,
WHEREAS, the Harry Chapin Food Bank provides food to more than 30 nonprofit agencies in Collier
County and through its mobile pantry program, called Fulfill; and,
WHEREAS, the Harry Chapin Food Bank formally opened a new 13,500 square foot Collier County
Center this year at 3940 Prospect Avenue, Unit 101, Naples; and,
WHEREAS, the new Collier County Center is helping the food bank provide more food, volunteer
opportunities and space to collaborate with the community; and,
WHEREAS, the Harry Chapin Food Bank encourages Collier County citizens to continue to volunteer,
advocate and donate to help end hunger in Collier County.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that Thursday, September 13, 2018, be designated as
HUNGER ACTION DAY IN COLLIER COUNTY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 11th Day of September 2018.
