EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve an amendment to the 2017 Tourism Agreement with Friends of the
Fakahatchee, Inc. (FOF) to extend the term 90 days to December 29, 2018, carry forward the
funding to FY2019, and make a finding that this project promotes tourism.
OBJECTIVE: Approve an extension to the agreement term with Friends of the Fakahatchee, Inc. for the
wayfinding project in the Fakahatchee Strand.
CONSIDERATIONS: In 2017, the Friends of the Fakahatchee (FOF) requested funding assistance for a
wayfinding project to promote the trails network at the Fakahatchee Strand. Unfortunately, due to state
permitting delays, the new maps and informational graphics development for the kiosks has been delayed.
These integral graphic designs will be developed into the content that will go in the kiosks and enhance
the visitor experience to the area. Due to these delays, the FOF is concerned it will be unable to meet the
original agreement completion date of September 30, 2018. Accordingly, FOF staff has requested that the
Board of County Commissioners extend the agreement term by 90 days until December 29, 2018 to
complete the wayfinding project in its entirety. The attached email from Patrick Higgins, President of the
Friends of Fakahatchee, Inc. outlines the extension request.
FISCAL IMPACT: There is no additional fiscal impact associated with this request. However, the
funding for this project will need to be carried over from FY 18 to FY 19.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no impact to the Growth Management Plan with this
Executive Summary.
ADVISORY BOARD RECOMMENDATION: The Tourist Development Council recommended
approval of the agreement 7-0 at the July 31, 2017 meeting.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item is approved as to form and legality and requires majority vote
for approval. - CMG

Re the Wayfinding Project for Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park’s Hiking, Biking, and Canoe Trail
System
As you are aware from the briefing at the TDC office on June 18th by Glen Stacell, FOF’s Project Manager
for the program, we are making good progress and the kiosks have now been delivered to the park and
TDC recognition plaques created.
However the new maps and informational graphics development in Tallahassee by the DEP is
proceeding slower than expected. This is the all-important content that will go in the kiosks and really
enhance the visitor experience. With all with the State approval processes we have to go through, I am
concerned whether FOF will be able to meet the original completion date of September 30, 2018.
The Friends of Fakahatchee therefore respectfully request that the Collier County Board of County
Commissioners extend the completion date by 90 days to December 29, 2018.
