Backup Documents 10/23/2012 Item # 4C PROCLAMATION C WHEREAS, substance abuse is a public health problem that has destroyed many lives and devastated count less families; and, WHEREAS, drug-related fatalities now exceed deaths due to motor vehicle accidents and account for more than 28,000 unintentional drug poisonings each year in the United States; and, WHEREAS, the Narcotics Overdose Prevention d Education (NOPE) Task Force was established to raise awareness and open doors to recovery by helping to remove the shame often associated with the disease of addiction; and, WHEREAS, the NOPE Task Force will hold its Sixth Annual Candlelight Vigil to warn of the profound dangers of drug and alcohol abuse; and, WHEREAS, the NOPE vigil helps us remember the children, family and friends lost to drug and alcohol related deaths in our community; and, WHEREAS, coordinated community-level engagement reduces drug use and saves lives; and, WHEREAS, the Collier County NOPE vigil, held on October 25'h at 6:30 p.m. at Cambier Park, is a collaborative effort with key leaders committed to making a difference by ensuring that fewer young people turn to drugs and alcohol. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that October 25, 2012 be designated as NOPE NATIONAL CANDLELIGHT VIGIL DAY DONE AND ORDERED THIS 23"d Day of October, 2012.
