WHEREAS, in 1957, the newly formed Mends of the Library of Collier County, Inc. successfully
petitioned the Collier County Board of County Commissioners to request that the Naples
Woman's Club "Book Room" become the first free public library in the county; and,
WHEREAS, from this auspicious day the Friends have continued to support and encourage library
service and special programs including Adult Literacy, Classic, Foreign and Documentary
Film Series, Genealogy; Adult and Children's Programs; Staff Training programs, purchase
of Novelist and Mango; in addition to other endeavors specifically designed to enhance
and improve the quality of life for the Collier County community,- and,
WHEREAS, these services and materials are available to 0 Collier County residents and visitors in
the ten library branches; and,
WHEREAS, since commemorating the &1h anniversary, the Friends have provided $100, 000 for
library materials, partnered with Marco Island residents to provide over $1.4 million to
construct Rose Hall, and provided $300, 0100 for library programs, furniture refinishing,
replacement of the Vanderbilt Beach branch circulation desk, scholarships for a staff
member to earn a Masters degree in Library and Information Science and to annually
recognize volunteers within the community; and
WHEREAS, throughout the 55 year partnership, the Friends of the Library and Collier County Public
Library have provided accessible and comprehensive information, educational recreational
and cultural services to the residents and visitors to Collier County.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that September 2012 be designated as
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY MONTH
in honor of the 5e anniversary of the partnership between the Friends of the Library and Collier
County Public Library.
