WHEREAS, the Harry Chapin food Bank, founded in 1983, serves the residents of Southwest Florida
by fulfilling its mission of overcoming hunger in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee
counties through education and collaboration with affiliated agencies in the procurement
and distribution of food in an equitable, non - discriminatory manner; and,
WHEREAS, in 2010 -2011, the Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed 13.7 million pounds of food and
other grocery items valued at more than $22 million, representing an increase of more
than 3009 over 2007, and,
WHEREAS, more than 37 million Americans, including 14 million children and 3 million seniors, rely on
food banks to secure food for their families; and,
WHEREAS, Feeding America, the largest hunger - relief organization in the United States, and
organizations that share a similar concern for hungry Americans, are recognizing the
magnitude of this issue and working to secure additional resources to help families fight
hunger; and,
WHEREAS, September 2012 has been designated 'National Hunger Action Month" and the Harry
Chapin Food Bank, in partnership with more than 150 agencies, has committed its support
for Feeding America's national effort to secure additional resources from our community
to combat hunger, and,
WHEREAS, any additional donations, funding or volunteer support generated in recognition of National
Hunger Action Month will benefit Southwest Floridians in need of assistance; and,
WHEREAS, this effort reduces hunger by providing valuable food resources for those in need of help
in our community.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that September 2012 be designated as
NATIONAL HUNGER ACTION MONTH
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 11 th Day of September, 2012.
