Backup Documents 06/26/2012 Item # 4APROCLAMATION 4 A WHEREAS, there are more than 36 million refugees and displaced people around the world and the number of refugees worldwide has doubled over the last decade; and, WHEREAS, the United States Department of State estimates that the number of refugees has grown from 7 mil /ion to 16 mil /ion and 80% are women and children, and, WHEREAS, June 20, 2012 marks the 12th annual recognition and celebration of World Refugee Day; and, WHEREAS, the United States has long been both a symbol of hope and a source of substantial aid for refugees around the world and, in partnership with private voluntary organizations and government agencies, Americans have provided generous humanitarian assistance to millions of persons dislocated by natural disaster or by civil strife; and, WHEREAS, the state of Florida has successfully resettled thousands of refugees over the years and many have become influential members of our society; and WHEREAS, Florida and its municipalities remain committed to a proud tradition of assisting and welcoming refugees to our communities; and, WHEREAS, Collier County is home to refugees from various parts of the world who we salute for their incredible tenacity and strength in overcoming Incredible odds and hardships while striving for a better, more peaceful life, seeking freedom and safety from persecution; and, WHEREAS, we thank all of the voluntary agencies, state and local governments and all the dedicated providers who work tirelessly to help refugees integrate into our society, laws and culture. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that Ane 20, 2012 be designated as WORLD REFUGEE DAY DONE AND ORDERED THIS 12th Day of Tune 2012.
