Backup Documents 04/23/2013 Item # 4D PROCLAMATION 4 Q WHEREAS, on May 8, 2013, Collier County will commemorate the 90'h anniversary of its creation by the 19th Regular Session of the Florida State Legislature in 1923; and, WHEREAS, Collier County, Florida's 62'd county, was established through the vision and dedication of businessman and advertising pioneer Barron Gift Collier; and, WHEREAS, Barron Collier personally directed the efforts of many to open up this county on the edge of Florida's last frontier and successfully completed the construction of the Tamiami Trail, the first highway in history to span the tip of Southwest Florida; and, WHEREAS, the first meeting of the Board of County Commissioners was held at 2:00 p.m. in the annex of the Rod and Gun Club in Everglades on July 7, 1923; and, WHEREAS, the first duly appointed County Commissioners were George Washington Storter, Jr., an Everglades resident since 1887, James Madison Barfield of Caxambas, Captain William D. Collier of Marco Island, Jack T. Taylor of Deep Lake and Immokalee cattleman Adolphus Carson; and, WHEREAS, Collier County has evolved from its rugged beginning into a community of dynamic growth, opportunity, prosperity, natural beauty and cultural diversity; and, WHEREAS, the Collier County Museum invites all citizens and visitors to celebrate the anniversary by participating in the events and exhibitions planned for May 8, 2013. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that May 8, 2013 be designated as the 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CREATION OF COLLIER COUNTY DONE AND ORDERED THIS 23rd Day of April, 2013.
