Backup Documents 04/09/2013 Item # 4E 4 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Parkinson's Disease is a progressive neurological movement disorder of the central nervous system, which has a unique impact on each patient; and, WHEREAS, symptoms include slowness, tremors, difficulty with balance and speech, rigidity, cognitive and memory problems, as well as non-motor symptoms; and, WHEREAS, according to the Parkinson's Action Network, National Parkinson's Foundation, Parkinson's Disease Foundation, the American Parkinson's Disease Association, and the National Institutes of Health, there are approximately .1.5 million people in the United States that are diagnosed with Parkinson's; and, WHEREAS, increased education and research are needed to help find more effective treatments with less side effects and ultimately a cure for Parkinson's Disease; and, WHEREAS, a multidisciplinary approach to Parkinson's Disease patient care includes local Wellness, Support and Care Partner Groups; and, WHEREAS, there currently is no cure for Parkinson's Disease; and, WHEREAS, April has been proclaimed Worldwide Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month for all to recognize the need for research and help dealing with the devastating effects of Parkinson's disease. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that April, 2013 be designated as PARKINSON'S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH DONE AND ORDERED THIS 9th Day of April, 2013.
