Backup Documents 01/08-09/2013 Item # 4CPROCLAMATION WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act into law on -rh 2J,862, creating a nationwide network of public universities known as land -grant universities; and, WHEREAS, land -grant universities democratized higher education in American and initially provided for the teaching of agricultural science, engineering and military tactics to improve the quality of American education in those subjects; and, WHEREAS, the University of Florida was designated to be the land -grant university for the state of Florida and has provided leadership in helping the United States produce the safest and most plentiful food supply in the world, and, WHEREAS, faculty members of the University of Florida have made significant strides in establishing and advancing the agricultural and natural resources sector as Florida's second largest industry; and, WHEREAS, the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) is a federal, state and county partnership dedicated to developing knowledge of agricultural, human and natural resources and the life sciences and sharing it with the citizens of Florida, and, WHEREAS, the UF/IFAS Collier County Extension Service is a part of the system that now includes 107 institutions in all 50 states and several U.S. territories and has contributed to a significant difference in the quality of life for all Floridians. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that we celebrate the 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MORRILL ACT DONE AND ORDERED THIS 8'h Day of January 2013.
