Agenda 10/26/2010 Item #16D 5Agenda Item No. 16D5 October 26, 2010 Page 1 of 18 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Recommendation to authorize staff to apply for a US Soccer Foundation Grant in the amount of $20,000 to provide for registration fees, uniforms, soccer equipment for the Youth Soccer program at Immokalee Sports Complex. Obiective: To increase participation of recreational soccer for the citizens of Collier County. Considerations: Each year, the US Soccer Foundation provides for grant funds to improve the health and well -being of children in economically disadvantaged areas using soccer as a vehicle for social change. The US Soccer Foundation provides for "program" grants to support the expansion of soccer. The grant application seeks funding for program registration for individuals who do not have the ability to pay, uniforms, and soccer equipment for the Immokalee Sports Complex recreational youth and adult soccer program. Legal Considerations: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney's Office and is legally sufficient for Board action. - CMG Fiscal Impact: If successful, the grant would provide $20,000 to be used to purchase registration fees, uniforms, and soccer equipment for the Immokalee Sports Complex Youth Soccer League. Growth Management Impact: The Immokalee Sports Complex is inventoried in the growth management plan. Recommendation: To approve the submittal of the US Soccer Foundation Grant for registration fees, uniforms, and soccer equipment for the Immokalee Sports Complex Youth Soccer League. Prepared by: Barry Williams, Director, Parks and Recreation Department Agenda Item No. 16D5 October 26, 2010 Page 2 of 18 COLLIER COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Item Number: 16D5 Item Summary: Recommendation to authorize staff to apply for a US Soccer Foundation Grant in the amount of $20,000 to provide for registration fees, uniforms, and soccer equipment for the Youth Soccer program at Immokalee Sports Complex. " Collier County Government is a municipality serving a community of approximately 318,537 individuals. The community is a coastal, Florida location that also has a number of seasonal visitors each year. The Parks and Recreation Department is a component of Collier County Government and serves the recreation and leisure needs of both residents and visitors alike. Our mission is to benefit the well -being of the people, community, and environment of Collier County thru recreation and leisure activities. Our department goals and objectives are to expand recreational activities to all citizens of the community in order to discourage juvenile delinquent behavior, decrease experimentation with drugs and alcohol, and to increase evidence of wellness and combat obesity with elementary, middle, high school, and young adults. In particular for the purposes of this grant, the target area is a subset of the County in the town of Immokalee, Florida. Immokalee is a town whose residents support the agriculture business in south Florida. Residents are predominantly migrant workers and individuals from diverse Agenda Item No. 161D5 October 26, 2010 Page 4 of 18 cultural backgrounds such as South America, Mexico, Haiti, and the Caribbean Islands. Many of the individuals to be served by this grant are considered at risk of substance abuse and criminal behavior due to the prevalence of poverty and transient nature of the residents The department provides recreational youth sports such as basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, and football to area residents. In addition, the department has aquatic facilities that provide swim lessons and opportunities for recreation thru aquatics. The department was founded in 1972 by the Collier County Board of County Commissioners to protect the health, welfare, and safety of persons using the parks.
