Agenda 09/14/2010 Item # 5A Agenda Item No. SA September 14, 2010 Page 1 of 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Recommendation to recognize James Bablitz, Traffic Signal Technician, Traffic Operations, as the Employee of the Month for August 2010. OBJECTIVE: To recognize James Bablitz, Traffic Signal Technician, as the Employee of the Month for July 2010. CONSIDERATIONS: James Bablitz, Traffic Signal Technician, has been nominated as the "Employee of the Month" for August 2010. James, an employee of the County for almost nine years, works for the Traffic Operations Department in the Growth Management Division. James is a diligent and dependable employee who consistently exceeds expectations. As a Traffic Signal Technician he always displays foresight and sound judgment when restoring lighting service to our roads. One example of his efforts was an innovative and cost saving suggestion for operating our Roadway Lighting System. The lights in our system work off of 480 volts. This is a very dangerous level of electricity that requires protective clothing and equipment. The Traffic Operations Department was recently in the process of converting to new uniforms and equipment to protect against this hazard. This new equipment was hot, heavy and restrictive and was not comfortable for employees working outside in our climate. James took on the issue and came up with a simplistic approach to de-energize and lockout the system at the source, and then temporarily charge each individual light to allow work tasks be completed. This approach not only eliminated the major electrical hazard, but also eliminated the need for protective clothing. Additionally, since only one light is on at a time, there will be an electrical cost savings to the County and a reduction in the amount of time lights have to be on during the day. This innovative suggestion was implemented and has proven to be an excellent and proactive safety measure. James' initiative to promote a safe and efficient workplace makes him an asset to the County. He is truly deserving of this award.
