Agenda 05/25/2010 Item #16J 1 Agenda Item No. 16J1 May 25, 2010 Page 1 of 2 Executive Summary Recommend approval for the Collier County Sheriff's Office to make an application to the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bulletproof Vest Partnership program to seek reimbursement for fifty percent of the cost of 214 bulletproof vests for law enforcement and corrections members. If awarded, request authorizations for the Collier County Sheriff's Office to accept the reimbursement grant, approve any associated budget amendments, and manage the reimbursement program for the two year period. OBJECTIVE: For the Board of County Commissioners to approve the Collier County Sheriff's Office registration and online application to the Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) program requesting approximately $70,000 for reimbursement of fifty percent of the cost of 214 bulletproof vests for law enforcement and corrections employees, CONSIDERATION: The Collier County Sheriff's Office provides bulletproof vests to its Law Enforcement Officers, Community Service Deputies and Corrections Officers. Bulletproof vests are replaced every five years in accordance with the manufacturer's warranty which expires five years from the date of manufacture. In light of continued budget reductions, CCSO is continuously seeking additional grant opportunities to offset the cost of equipment and salaries. The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bulletproof Vest Partnership can provide reimbursement of 50% of the cost of each appropriate vest type. CCSO projects a need for 214 vests to be purchased and distributed in the coming year as part of its regular replacement cycle. FISCAL IMPACT: The application will request approximately $70,000 to provide reimbursement for fifty percent (50%) of the cost of 2] 4 bulletproof vests. The remaining cost of the vests will be paid out of the Sheriff's Office operating budget. There are no additional general fund dollars being requested for this grant. GROWTH MANAGEMENT: No recurring costs for subsequent years. RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners approves the Collier County Sheriffs Office registration and application to the Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) program requesting approximately $70,000 for reimbursement of fifty percent of the cost of 2]4 bulletproof vests for law enforcement and corrections employees.
