-Discussion regarding; the bane of mesh size for nets for local fishermen. The Florida Fish
and Wildlife Commission (FWC) currently has a Net Limitation Act, allowing commercial
fishermaw a net with no more I than 500 square feet of mesh. Additionally, the Fish and
Wildlife Commission made a rule that the mesh size of said nets would be 2" or smaller.
Anything larger would be considered .a gilinet and a felony offense. its were told in
2009 at a FWC meeting in Dania Beach, Florida, that their request to change the 2" mesh
size to allow fishermen the power to use whatever mesh necessary to harvest legal
marketable fish. Propose a letter of support is written to the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Commission supporting the ability of fishermen to use whatever mesh necessary to harvest
legal, marketable rush.
OBJECTIVE: For the Board of County Commissioners to discuss writing a letter of support
to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) requesting them to reconsider the
restrictions of only allowing 2" mesh sizes, which is currently having a devastating effect on
local fishermen and their livelihood,
CONSIDERATIONS: To send a letter of support to the Florida Fish and Wildlife requesting
their reconsideration for mesh net sizes.
