Notes: June 14, BOCC Meeting Report, Black Affairs Advisory Board Mr. Chairman, Commissioners, I'm Keith Upson, vice-chair of the Black Affairs Advisory Board. Also in attendance this morning are [NAME, NAME, NAME]. Thank you for the oppOltunity to report to you today. In my five years on the Board, we've had membership issues off and on: in recent months, the problem has been mostly on, making it difficult for us to have a quorum in attendance to conduct business and fulfill our charge to "identify and evaluate problems unique to the Black Community, review and recommend ways to ensure open communication between minorities and Collier County government and provide periodic reports to the Commissioners" I'm here today on that third point, to report to you what we're doing to foster and encourage community participation on the first two points: identifying and evaluating problems unique to the Black Community, and reviewing and recommending ways to ensure open communication between minorities and Collier County government. . In an effort to increase public awareness, access, and involvement, we held our April 25 meeting at the Golden Gate Community Center, and were fortunate to have members of the public attend and share some of their questions with us. Specifically, we received public feedback on questions that seem best addressed by the Sheriff's Department [Minority Affairs / Community Oriented Policing] representatives, so what we're doing to ensure open communication between those residents and Collier County government is coordinating a presentation from Sheriff's Department [Minority Affairs / Community Oriented Policing] representatives at the Golden Gate Community Center to coincide witb a future BAAB meeting there, so we can all benefit from the dialog that we think will result. We received a question from the public about programs that exist for residents to mentor people in the juvenile detention facility, to act as a role model and help transition them when released, if any such program exists, and if not, how to start one - and like the previous issue, we're working to co-ordinate a meeting between the appropriate representative from the Sheriffs Department I DJJ to speak at a future BAAB meeting at the Golden Gate Community Center, to answer those questions. In fact, the theme seemed to be one of matching existing resources with concerns in the community, and we're delighted to be able to fulfill our mission to help identify and evaluate these issues and review and recommend ways to ensure open communication between minorities and Collier County government. Because our GGCC meeting achieved what we'd hoped, we plan on continuing to hold meetings in local community centers - Riverpark, ne)..""!, with the cooperation of the City, and then lmmokolee. Our goal is to broaden public awareness of our existence and mission, and hopefully encourage public participation both at meetings and by increasing membership. Thank you for the opportunity to report to you tbis morning on what your Black Affairs Advisory Board has been doing and what we plan on doing [closing statement] .
