Post Illegal Signs? Expect Annoying Calls
St. Johns County Officials Crack Down On Unwanted Business Signs

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- St. Johns County officials said they've found a new way to
crack down on unwanted signs lining their county's roads.
They said they're getting back at the people behind the signs with unwanted calls.
Many of the illegal signs have phone numbers for people to call. County officials said
they're entering those numbers into an automated system, which calls homes as often
as 20 times a day. The calls are made morning, noon and night to let sign owners know
they're breaking the law.
"The system does call people repetitively until they remove their signs, so it does
become a nuisance for them that encourages them to come into compliance," St. Johns
County spokeswoman Karen Pan said.
The female computer voice leaves an annoying two-minute message for violators.
"This is St. Johns County, Fla., calling," the automated caller says. "You are being
called because you are in potential violations. ... Any signs placed on private property
are prohibited. They are in the rights of way."
Business owner Sven Shroder said he's fed up with the illegal signs littering the
roadside in St. Johns County. Some signs were recently posted, while others have been
there for months.
"It looks really trashy in some areas, and right in front of my shop I've got five of them,"
Shroder said.
Currently, 360 people in St. Johns County are receiving the phone calls from the
automated caller, and if the caller doesn't answer, a phone message is left every single
time.
"The reason we implemented this system is because it really saves manpower to do
more with less," Pan said. "Rather than having a person do this day-to-day, we can
utilize technology to let people know when they are in violations."
"The signs that are proliferating out here on the road really are becoming a distraction,"
Shroder said.
