Agenda 06/12/2018 Item #16J 106/12/2018 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Recommendation to approve the use of $500 from the Confiscated Trust Funds to support the Florida Missing Children’s Day Foundation. OBJECTIVE: To request that the Board approve the use of $500 to support the Florida Missing Children’s Day Foundation. CONSIDERATION: The Florida Missing Children’s Day Foundation by virtue of Section 932.7055 (5)(c) 1 Florida Statutes is seeking Board authorization for the appropriation of funds to support the Florida Missing Children’s Day 2018. Florida Missing Children’s Day Foundation has applied to the Sheriff for appropriation. The Collier County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) requests Board approval to appropriate $500 to support the Florida Missing Children’s Day Foundation. Florida Missing Children’s Day Foundation objective is to raise awareness of Florida’s currently missing children, to educate the public on child safety and abduction prevention, and to recognize those individuals and law enforcement officers who have made outstanding contributions in the missing children issue. The CCSO requests $500 from the Confiscated Trust Funds to be used to support the Florida Missing Children’s Day 2018. This support will benefit the Florida Missing Children’s Day Foundation mission. FISCAL IMPACT: A budget amendment is needed in the amount of $500 from the Confiscated Trust Fund (602) reserves to support the Florida Missing Children’s Day Foundation. The source of funding are proceeds from confiscated property. LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to form and legality, and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners authorize the budget amendment to appropriate $500 Confiscated Trust Funds to support the Florida Missing Children’s Day Foundation. The United States Department o, Justice reported that in a one year period, 797,500 children were reported missing. That amounts to 2,185 children reported missing each day. Though many missing children return safely, there are a number who are never recovered. Families and those connected lo a missing child are teft to deal with the daily agony lrom lhe counlless unanswered questions that surround the disappearance. The pain never goes away and the void left in their lives cannot be filled. It is important that these families know they are supported and their missing child is not Iorgotten. For that reason, the Florida Missing Children's Day Foundation, lnc. was formed in support of the Florida Department ol Law Enlorcemenls (FDLE) Missing and Endangered Persons lnlormation Clearinghouse Advisory Board. The primary mission ot the Florida Missing Children's Day Foundation, lnc. is to sponsor the Florida Missing Children's Day each year in Tallahassee. This moving ceremony brings together state ofticials, law enlorcement officers, educalors and citizens lrom around Florida, to surround the lamilies ol missing children, oflering supporl, remembrance, and hope. Florida Missing Children's Day provides an opportunity to recognize exceptional lirst responders, citizens and school employees who work to protect our state's children, as well as brave young heroes who acted courageously in the face oJ abduction. There is also a child identirication and salety lair held betore the event, with canine tracking bloodhounds from the Jimmy Ryce Center greeting attendees. The ceremony and the salety ,air are an integral component of Florida's ongoing efforts lo raise awareness and educate the public about missing person issues. The effort to remember Florida's missing children and comfort their lamilies can only happen lhrough the generosity ot donors to the Florida Missing Children's Day Foundation. The 501(c)(3) organization was crealed in direct-support of FDLE with the mission ol providing the base lor the linancial support needed to stage the annual ceremony.
