PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, in 1962, Edison Junior College offered its first classes to students
throughout Southwest Florida; and,
WHEREAS, the institution evolved from a junior college to a community college,
established a site in Collier County in 1974, and opened the Collier County
Campus within Lely Resort in 1992; and,
WHEREAS, in 2008, Edison became a state college, a reflection of its ability to offer
Baccalaureate degrees, Associate degrees and professional certifications;
and,
WHEREAS, 2012 marks 50 years of Edison State College providing educational and
career opportunities to thousands of students; and
WHEREAS, with over 35, 000 Edison State College graduates, the community benefits
from the highly- trained professionals in medical, business, education and
technology fields; and,
WHEREAS, Edison State College covers the largest geographical area in the state of
Florida, serving Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties, and
employs nearly 1, 400 full- and part -time professionals.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that Tuesday, July 24, 2012 be designated as
EDISON STATE COLLEGE DAY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 12'* Day of June 2012.
