PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, members of the United States Armed Forces defend citizens'rights to life, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness, 'and protect us from harm at home and abroad; and,
WHEREAS, providing services and opportunities for military families is a top priority of Collier
County and the Collier County Veterans Services Division; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County residents have a proud history of service in the United States Armed
Forces in times of peace and war; and,
WHEREAS, many Collier County residents continue to serve on active duty in the National Guard
and in the reserve components of the United States Armed Forces; and,
WHEREAS, there are more than 29,000 veterans currently residing in Collier County, nearly 8
percent of our population; and,
WHEREAS, on April 20, 1999, the Senate passed S. Res. 33 (106th Congress) as National Military
Appreciation Month, calling on the people of the United States, in a symbolic act of
unity, to observe May as National Military Appreciation Month to honor the current
and former members of the Armed Forces, including those who died in the pursuit of
freedom and peace; and,
WHEREAS, it is important to emphasize to the people of Collier County the relevance of the history
and activities of the Armed Forces. The month of May was selected for this display of
patriotism because we celebrate Victory in Europe (VE) Day, Military Spouse Day,
Loyalty Day, Armed Forces Day/Week and Memorial Day during this month; and,
WHEREAS, the Collier County Board of County Commissioners wish to recognize and honor all
members of the United States Armed Forces, past and present, as well as their families
for their service and sacrifice.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that May 2018 be designated as
MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH IN COLLIER COUNTY
