WHEREAS, - Bladder cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the United States and third
most common in the state of Florida; and,
WHEREAS, men have a one in twenty -seven chance and women have a one in eighty -seven
chance of being diognosed with bladder cancer in their lifetime; urrd,
WHEREAS, in 2013, approximately 73, 01010 new cases of bladder cancer will be diagnosed in
the United States and nearly 14, 01010 people will die fm m the disease; and,
WHEREAS, bladder cancer occurs in more women amually than cervical cancer; and,
WHEREAS, women often receive a delayed diagnosis due to their symptoms being mistaken for
common gynecological problems rather than bladder cancer; and,
WHEREAS, although bladder cancer can occur at any age, a high percentage of individuals
suffering from Me disease ore over the age of 55; and,
WHEREAS, due to a recurrence rate of 50 -80 percent, bladder cancer is one of the most
expensive cancers to treat.
�7W THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that July 2013 be designated as
BLADDER CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
