EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to increase the limits of aircraft liability insurance coverage on the
Medflight helicopter from $20,000,000 to $30,000,000 per occurrence in order to comply
with the CAMTS (Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems)
accreditation requirements in the amount of$1,380 annually.
OBJECTIVE: To gain approval from the Board to increase the limits of aircraft liability insurance
coverage on the Medflight helicopter from $20,000,000 to $30,000,000 per occurrence in order to
comply with the CAMTS (Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems) accreditation
requirements.
CONSIDERATIONS: As part of an ongoing effort to assure patient and public safety in the operation
of the MedFlight helicopter, EMS is seeking accreditation of the flight program through the
Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS). Requiring accreditation of air
ambulance services provides assurance that the service meets national public safety standards. The
accreditation is done by professionals who are qualified to determine air ambulance safety. In addition,
compliance with accreditation standards is done on a continual basis by the accrediting organization.
Their accreditation standards are periodically revised to reflect the dynamic, changing environment of
medical transport with considerable input from all disciplines of the medical profession.
One of the requirements of accreditation is that the aircraft liability insurance limits of the body seeking
accreditation must be $30,000,000 per occurrence. Currently, the limits carried are $20,000,000 per
occurrence. The Risk Management staff sought a quote from the County's aircraft insurance broker,
Nation Air to increase the limit of insurance. The cost to increase the limit is $1,380 per year.
Staff recommends this purchase in order to comply with the accreditation standards of CAMTS with an
effective date of October 1, 2012.
FISCAL IMPACT: The total premium to increase the limit is $1,380 per year. Funds are available
within Fund 516, Property and Casualty Self Insurance Fund for this purchase.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no growth management impact associated with this
item.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney's Office, requires
majority vote, and is legally sufficient for Board action. — CMG
RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the Board approves an increase to the limits of aircraft
liability insurance coverage on the Medflight helicopter from $20,000,000 to $30,000,000 per
occurrence in order to comply with the CAMTS (Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport
Systems) accreditation requirements at an annual cost of$1,380.
