EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Recommendation to approve the MakerLab Club Application with 3D Systems Inc. in order for the Collier County Public Library to receive four 3D printers for public programming use with a value of $4,000. OBJECTIVE: To become a member of "The MakerLab Club" and provide the public four 3D printers for Library programming. CONSIDERATIONS: The "maker movement" is a growing programming element of many libraries throughout the United States. With the emphasis on science and technology in schools, public library maker labs are a natural extension of traditional library programs to engage both children and adults in the community. 3D Systems. in collaboration with the American Library Association and the Association of Science and Technology Centers is committed to expanding young people's access to 21st century tools that can help them learn and create, including 3D Design, 3D Scanning and 3D Printing, The MakerLab Club is a community of U.S. libraries and museums committed to advance 3D digital literacy and provide their members and communities with access to 3D printers and programs. 3D Systems will donate 3D printers to select museums and libraries across the country who join the MakerLab Club and establish access to 3D printing and design opportunities for their communities. The project is an excellent opportunity for the Collier County Public Library to support community -based learning and encourage critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. The printers will be located at various branches in secured locations and will be used under the supervision of staff and trained volunteers. Initial equipment is supplied at no cost. The Friends of the Library will provide replacement supplies as needed. FISCAL IMPACT: The fair market value of the four 3D printers is $1,000 each for an estimated total cost of $4,000. The printers would be donated by MakerLab Club. The Friends of the Library will provide replacement supplies as needed, up to an annual cost of $10,000. LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to form and legality, and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: None. RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners approves the MakerLab Club Application allowing the Collier County Public Library to apply for four 3D printers, at no cost to the Library or County. WHAT ARE MAKERLABS? MakerLabs are equipped with 3D Printers that can be used to turn digital designs into physical objects. They foster experimentation, invention, creation and exploration through design thinking and project based learning. MakerLabs help patrons pursue their interests in building things, collaborate and share. Makerl-abs can be used to run programs for members or visitors. They can be used for 3D printing, design and proto -typing and scanning. They can also be offered as a resource to the community, allowing schools, non - profits and other groups to reserve the MakerLab Space for class sessions, and school, after- school and camp programs. ELIGIBILITY AND MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS Membership is available to libraries, museums and science and technology centers committed to creating or expanding makerlabs and /or makerspaces and providing community access to 3D printers and digital design. This effort is about more than giving away 3D printers —it's about creating a sustainable, credible maker program in your local community. Applicants agree to: • Have a staff member responsible for using and maintaining 3D printers at their facility • Provide 3D printing programs, classes or trainings within the first year of membership • Have a plan for engaging the community through partnerships, educational programs, etc. • Provide 3DS, ASTC and ALA stories, updates and photos to share and promote as appropriate. PRINTER DONATIONS The MakerLab Club is open to museums and libraries of all budgets and sizes, but members must show they are dedicated to advancing "making" through continuous progr amming and development. No financial commitment is required. In order to receive 2 -4 Cube 3D printers, members must demonstrate through this application a strong plan for hosting a MakerLab that will used in a meaningful manner by patrons and trainers on a regular basis.
