EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to appoint a member to the Ochopee Fire Control District Advisory Committee.
OBJECTIVE: To appoint a member to the Ochopee Fire Control District Advisory Committee as a
representative of the City of Everglades, to serve the remainder of a vacated term expiring on December
31, 2018.
CONSIDERATIONS: This five-member committee was created by Ordinance No. 89-98 to advise the
Board of County Commissioners on the operations and budget of the Ochopee Fire Control District.
Members must reside within the boundaries of the Ochopee Area Fire Control Special Taxing District,
and include 1 member from Everglades City (appointed by the Mayor), 1 member from Plantation Island,
1 member from Chokoloskee, 1 member from Lee Cypress (Copeland) and 1 member from Ochopee.
Terms are 2 years. A list of the current membership is included in the backup.
On December 8, 2015, under agenda item 10.F, the Board of County Commissioners voted to not
reappoint the member representing Everglades City, due to excessive absenteeism. The Mayor of
Everglades City was asked to recommend another candidate to represent the city’s interest on this
committee, but did not do so. In light of this, on September 27, 2017, under agenda item 16.K.11, the
Board of County Commissioners appointed another resident of the Ochopee Fire Control District to fill
the vacant Everglades City seat.
The new administration in Everglades City has expressed a desire to have a representative on this
committee once again. They recommend the following member of the Everglades City Council for
appointment:

COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: There are currently no vacancies on this committee; however,
committee member Ron Gilbert has willingly offered to resign his seat so that Councilman Smith may be
appointed to fill the remainder of his term, which expires on December 31, 2018. The committee
recommends that Councilman Smith be appointed to the committee, effective upon the acceptance of Mr.
Gilbert’s resignation. A recommendation letter is included in the backup.
FISCAL IMPACT: None.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: None.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners accepts the resignation of Mr. Ron
Gilbert, appoints Councilman Timothy Smith as the Everglades City representative on the committee, and
directs the County Attorney to prepare a resolution confirming the appointment.
