EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve Tourist Development Tax marketing funding to replace the Marco
Island Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information sign damaged by Hurricane Irma and make a
finding that this expenditure promotes tourism.
OBJECTIVE: Approve funding for Visitor Information sign at Marco Island Chamber office.
CONSIDERATIONS: Hurricane Irma heavily impacted Marco Island and one of the damaged
businesses was the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce. The sign at their office on Collier Blvd. (951)
was destroyed. The Marco Chamber office serves as a Visitor Information Center for the island and has
been a fixture there for many years. Many visitors come into the Chamber for area information and to get
recommendations from the volunteer staff on hotels, restaurants, attractions and shopping. The Chamber
has erected a temporary banner (photo attached) to direct visitors to their door, but a permanent
replacement is needed.
The Chamber staff has a commitment of $2,000 from one of their members to assist in the cost of the new
sign. The Chamber has solicited bids for the sign replacement and has received two quotes from sign
companies. Several other sign companies have been contacted, but they have chosen not to bid on the
project. Attached are both quotes and a recap is below:
Signarama Bid includes LED Display, Cabinet and permitting $9,010
Elektrosign 55” display with battery backup, shipping, install $12,394
The Marco Island Chamber would like to use Signarama to provide this replacement sign and they are the
low bidder. The design will include the CVB logo to indicate our contribution to the sign. A County PO
will commence the work for the approved vendor.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funding for this sign is available in the Tourism Division FY 18 BCC approved
budget in Fund 184, Tourism Promotion.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no impact to the Growth Management Plan with this
Executive Summary.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This request for funds is an authorized expenditure of the tourist
development tax with a recommendation and finding that the expenditure promotes tourism by the Tourist
Development Council and subject to approval and finding that this expenditure promotes tourism by the
Board of County Commissioners. This item is approved as to form and legality and requires majority vote
for approval. - CMG
ADVISORY BOARD ACTION: The Tourist Development Council recommended approval of this item
8-0 at the February 26, 2018 meeting.
RECOMMENDATION: Recommendation to approve marketing funding to replace the Marco Island
Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information sign damaged by Hurricane Irma at a net cost of up to $7,010
and make a finding that this expenditure promotes tourism.
