EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve County participation in the 5th annual World's Largest Swim Lesson
event on June 20, 2014 and authorize the Chairman to sign the World's Largest Swimming Lesson
Host Facility Liability and Publicity Release form. Fiscal impact:S4,000.
OBJECTIVE: To locally host the national World's Largest Swim Lesson program to raise awareness of
water safety and drowning.
CONSIDERATIONS: The World Water Park Association sponsors a program to promote the message
that swim lessons save lives. More than 35,000 children are expected to participate world-wide this year.
Olympic Athletes including gold medalists Rowdy Gaines and Janet Evans serve as spokespeople for this
event.
The local event, a first for Collier County Parks and Recreation, will be held at Sun-N-Fun Lagoon at the
North Collier Regional Park on Friday, June 20 at 11:00am. Community partners include The Safe and
Healthy Children's Coalition, City of Naples,Naples YMCA,Naples Community Hospital,North Naples
Fire Department, Collier County EMS, and The American Red Cross. Our goal is to have 1500 children
participate in a swim lesson at the same time. if successful, this would break the current single facility
record in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Participants will not be charged a Sun-N-Fun Lagoon entrance fee to participate in this event and will be
allowed to remain in the park until 2:00 pm. Participants will be limited to those children participating in
local summer camp programs. In order to accommodate the event, Sun-N-Fun will be closed to the public
from 10:00 am— 12:00 pm and will open to the public at noon and close at 7:00 pm.
FISCAL IMPACT: It is anticipated that the event will have a fiscal impact of$4,000, with $3,000 in
transportation and $1,000 in personnel costs for additional lifeguards. Funding is available in the MSTD
General Fund (111) Summer Camp cost center(156320) and General Fund (001) Sun-N-Fun Lagoon cost
center(156314). The loss of revenue resulting from closing Sun-N-Fun Lagoon to the general public from
10:00 am to noon will be offset by extending operational hours an additional two hours and closing at
7:00 pm.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no growth management impact associated with this
item.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been approved as to form and legality and requires
majority vote for approval. -CMG
RECOMMENDATION: Recommendation that the Board approve participation in the 5th annual
World's Largest Swim Lesson event to be held at North Collier Regional Park, Sun-N-Fun Lagoon on
June 20, 2014 and authorize the Chairman to sign the World's Largest Swimming Lesson Host Facility

The Presenting Organizations have not inspected or tested any of the host facilities and will not be present
at the facilities during or prior to the WLSL Lesson.The design, construction, operation and maintenance
of the facilities and the instruction and supervision of all facility staff, participants and their parents or
guardians in attendance shall be the sole responsibility of each facility as per local, state and federal pool
and spa regulations and no Presenting Organization or their parents, partners, stockholders, affiliates,
subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies and their respective directors,officers, employees,
licensees, ("Releasees"), and all others associated with the development and execution of this event shall
be liable for the safety of any employees, instructors, participants or their parents and guardians or for
