WHEREAS, April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and intended to draw attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and impacts every community member of Collier County,- and April 6th to April 12'h is National Crime Victims Week; and WHEREAS, rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment impact our community as seen by statistics indicating that one in five women and one in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives (Black et al., 2011); and WHEREAS, child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that one in six boys and one in four girls will experience a sexual assault before the age of 18 (Dube et al. , 2005),• and WHEREAS, in 1984, the Crime Victims Fund was established by the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) to provide a permanent source of support for crime victim services and compensation through fines and penalties paid by convicted federal offenders; and WHEREAS, with leadership and encouragement, there is evidence that we can successfully help prevent sexual violence and violent crimes in Collier County through increased education, awareness and community involvement; and WHEREAS, Rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment and violent crime impact our community as seen by statistics indicating that one in five women and one in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives (Black et al., 2011),• and IEREAS, Project HELP, Inc., the Collier County Sheriff's Office, State Attorney's office 20th Judicial Circuit of Collier county are ,,joining forces with victim service program and criminal justice officials in an effort to raise awareness of victims' rights and to observe National Crime Victims' Rights Week from April 6 through April 12, 2014; and NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that April 2014 be designated as SEXUAL ASSAUL T AWARENESS MONTH DONE AND ORDERED THIS 8th Day of April, 2014 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA TOM HENNING, CHAIRMAN Packet Page -21- COLLIER COUNTY Board of County Commissioners Item Number: 4.4.1. 4/8/2014 4.1.
