EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve and authorize the Chairman to sign a Florida Native Plant Society
(FNPS) Conservation Grant application for a maritime hammock restoration project at the Gordon
River Greenway Park in the amount of $16,357.
OBJECTIVE: To apply for a FNPS Conservation Grant to fund a habitat restoration project at the
Gordon River Greenway Park.
CONSIDERATIONS: FNPS Conservation Grants support applied native-plant conservation projects in
Florida that promote the preservation, conservation, or restoration of rare or imperiled native plant taxa
and rare or imperiled native plant communities. The tropical maritime hammock is a rare native plant
community. Through the proposed planting project at the Gordon River Greenway Park, volunteers would
plant just over 700 tropical maritime hammock plants within approximately 1.2 acres of land that was
cleared of exotic plants in April 2017. Additionally, through County matching funds, 44 acres of rare
native plant communities will be treated for invasive, exotic plants. Therefore, the project meets the FNPS
Conservation Grant qualifications.
If funding is awarded, the final agreement and any necessary Budget Amendments will be brought to the
Board of County Commissioners (Board) for approval.
FISCAL IMPACT: The total cost of the project is estimated to be $16,356.50. Collier County is
requesting $5,000 from FNPS to purchase plants and is offering $11,356.50 as a local contribution. Match
is not required for this grant but it is being included to make the application more competitive. Matching
funds are currently available in the Conservation Collier Land Management Trust Fund (174) Gordon
River Greenway Cost Center.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: This proposal supports Goals 1 and 6 of the Conservation and
Coastal Management Element of the County Growth Management Plan, which require the County to
protect, conserve, manage and appropriately use natural resources including vegetative communities and
wildlife habitat.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item is approved for form and legality and requires a majority vote
for Board approval. -JAB

Greenway Park.
