EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to authorize the collection of donations by the United Way staff at a co- sponsored
event with the Parks and Recreation Division on October 24, 2015 at Sugden Regional Park and
make a finding the associated expenditure serves a valid public purpose.
OBJECTIVE: To support The United Way's fundraising efforts for the 2015 -2016 season.
CONSIDERATIONS: On June 23, 2015 (Item No. 16D16), the Board approved Resolution 2015 -127
recognizing the worthwhile goals of the United Way of Collier County and the positive impacts of
participating in the United Way of Collier County Campaign.. County employees have been encouraged
to support and participate in the United Way Campaign activities and in that spirit, a Parks and Recreation
staff member approached senior staff with the idea of putting together an even that would promote both
the United Way and new and ongoing Parks and Recreation programs.
To this end, the Parks and Recreation Division in conjunction with the United Way of Collier County will
hold a Parks and Recreation Division Showcase and fundraiser benefiting the United Way of Collier
County on Saturday October 24h at Sugden Regional Park. The Showcase will highlight programs
provided at both East Naples Community Park and Eagle Lakes Community Park and will include
demonstrations of Zumba, Karate, and Pickleball. The event will culminate with a feature of children,
teenagers, adults, seniors, and adaptive skiers have participated or are currently enrolled in the Division's
popular water ski program. The event also serves to highlight the water ski program's ten -year
anniversary and contributes to a worthwhile cause.
Admittance to the park and the event will be free; however, donations will be accepted and handled
exclusively by United Way staff.
FISCAL IMPACT: Total expenditures for the Showcase are available within General Fund (001) in the
Parks and Recreation Division Sugden Regional Park operating budget and are estimated at $985. These
are direct costs that will be used to promote the Parks and Recreation Division skiing program, Kids
Zumba, and provide information about the recently opened Donna Fiala Community Center at Eagle
Lakes Community Park.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no growth management impact associated with this
item.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been approved as to form and legality and requires that
the Board make a finding that the expenditure of funds to benefit the non - profit group promotes a valid
public purpose. This item requires majority vote for approval. — CMG
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners allows the United Way staff to
collect donations and waives all participants fees for the 2015 Parks and Recreation Showcase to benefit
the United Way at Sugden Regional Park and makes a finding that this expenditure serves a valid public
purpose.
