EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to authorize the Collier County Black Affairs Advisory Board to hold
the annual "Diabetes Awareness Day."
OBJECTIVE: That the Board of County Commissioners authorize the Collier County Black
Affairs Advisory Board (BARB) to hold the annual "Diabetes Awareness Day."
CONSIDERATIONS: Diabetes is a chronic, incurable disease that affects more than 26
million children and adults in America. The BAAB wishes to urge the Collier County
community to combat this disease and its life - threatening complications by familiarizing
themselves with the diabetes warning signs, making healthy lifestyle choices with respect to
diet and activities, and by accessing the best quality of care that Collier County provides to its
citizens.
The BARB is an advisory board to the Board of County Commissioners. In partnership with
other community partners, the BAAB successfully held their first "Diabetes Awareness Day"
in 2014.
If approved by the Board, the next "Diabetes Awareness Day" will take place on November 7,
2015 at the Golden Gate Community Center. The event will offer free diabetes screenings
conducted by other community partners, and will provide information on disease prevention,
disease management, healthy lifestyles, fitness programs and other educational resources.
FISCAL IMPACT: Refreshments for attendees at a cost not to exceed $500. Promotional
flyers and signs will be designed and produced internally by the Communication and
Customer Relations Division.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no Growth Management impact associated
with this Executive Summary.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County attorney, is
approved as to form and legality, and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners authorize the Collier
County Black Affairs Advisory Board (BAAB) to hold the annual "Diabetes Awareness
Day."
