You can make sure no child has a holiday season like the one Kristi had the year she saved the lives of her mother, brother and sister. She was just 15. A TERRIFYING CROSS-COUNTRY DRIVE That year,Kristi's family spent Christmas in Lexington,Ky.Her mom,Amy,planned to drive home to Forest Lake,Mimi with the children, while her husband,a pastor, traveled elsewhere for work. They weren't on the road long before Kristi realized something was very wrong. Her mom seemed seriously sick;she was swerving dangerously all over the road.Kristi's younger siblings were in the back seat, and she knew she had to do something. Kristi had earned her learner's permit about a month earlier."I wasn't a very good driver, but I said,`Mom,you have to let me drive. "I went into survival mode.I knew we would die if my mom kept driving.I had to become the mom for a little while." Thanks to Kristi's courage, they made the 15-hour drive home safely with Kristi at the wheel and Amy passed out in the seat next to her.A month or two later,Amy went to Hazelden at Center City for an assessment and was admitted to treatment for alcohol addiction. Today,Amy has been sober seven years. Thanks to contributions from generous donors like you,she and her family were rescued from a life-threatening struggle with alcoholism. As the Director of Clinical Services at the Women's Recovery Center in Center City,I have heard so many stories about women like Amy who hide their addictions, who can't bring themselves to get the help they desperately need to save themselves and their families. THE PERFECT WIFE AND MOTHER Amy was a model mom for years before she began drinking. She was a busy pastor's wife, church music director, mother of three beautiful children and stalwart member of the parish. She kept dozens of balls up in the air without breaking a sweat. Today,Amy is seven sober years into a strong recovery program. She is happily remarried. She has repaired her relationships with her children. But that wasn't enough for Amy.Her life was so transformed by her treatment at Hazelden that she felt she had to pay forward the caring help she received. She enrolled in—and completed—the master's program at Hazelden's Graduate School of Addiction Studies. And now you can find her most any day of the week on Hazelden's Center City campus, counseling patients who are battling addiction, sharing her personal experiences and offering hope. As her daughter,ICristi, now 22,says,"She's an inspiration. You can use the darkest parts of your life to bring the greatest light to other people. There's so much beauty in that?
