EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve and authorize the Chair to execute Contract Number 16-7010,
“Design and Related Services for CR-846/ Immokalee Rd over Gator Canal Bridge Replacement or
Rehabilitation (Bridge Number 030160)” in the amount of $326,991.00 with T.Y. Lin International
(Project No. 66066).

OBJECTIVE: To obtain professional engineering design and related services for the replacement or
rehabilitation of bridge number 030160 on CR 846/Immokalee Rd. over the Gator Canal to maintain a
safe and reliable public transportation route.
CONSIDERATIONS: After considering the bridge inspection reports and condition letters received
from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the existing condition of the timber foundations,
the year of construction (1955), widening previously performed (1977), and previous pile repair history,
bridge replacement or rehabilitation was determined to be necessary.
At the January 10, 2017 meeting, the Board accepted the selection committee’s ranking and authorized
staff to negotiate a contract with T.Y. Lin International (Agenda Item 16.A.5).
This contract will allow staff to obtain the professional engineering design and related services necessary
to develop construction plans and related documents for the replacement or rehabilitation of the bridge.
During the design phase, staff will continue to monitor the condition of the bridge and take additional
temporary measures, as necessary, to maintain the serviceability of the structure until it is replaced or
refurbished under a subsequent construction contract. The attached contract was reviewed and approved
by the County Attorney.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funds in the amount of $326,991.00 are available within the Transportation Gas Tax
Supported Fund (313) Bridge Project No. 66066 for the design and engineering services of the Gator
Canal Bridge (#030160). The construction project is planned for the later part of FY19, with an expected
cost of $3.5 to $4.5 million. The bridge replacement has been approved by the Board as part of the five
year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
Post-construction, reconstructed bridges are expected to have minimal to no maintenance costs during the
first 5 to 7 years of service. Future maintenance costs will be absorbed into the regular maintenance
schedule thereafter within the Road and Bridge Maintenance Fund (101).
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: The project is in conformance with the goals and objectives
of the Transportation Element of the Growth Management Plan.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item is approved as to form and legality, and requires majority vote
for Board approval. -SRT
