Agenda 10/10/2017 Item #16H310/10/2017 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Recommendation to provide a letter of support for a grant application from the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council to the U.S. EDA to fund a disaster recovery coordinator position. OBJECTIVE: To support regional efforts to recover from Hurricane Irma. CONSIDERATIONS: The Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council (SWFRPC) is seeking to fund a regional disaster recovery coordinator position through a $250,000 U.S. EDA grant. Below is a brief description of this position, as outlined by the U.S. EDA: The project has three high priority components identified as needs of local governments: 1) Convening and facilitating meetings of key players in the recovery process to aid in prioritizing, aligning, and coordinating resources/assets; 2) Providing direct assistance to navigate and leverage local, state, federal, and other resources and to meet/comply with the respective requirements therein to local governments; and 3) Convening and sharing of findings and best practices related to needs and resiliency with federal, state, regional and local partners through periodic meetings or calls during the 24-month project period. The best practices and strategies will be integrated into the development of the CEDS for the region. There may be need for additional services depending on the need which might include the development of plans or modification of existing plans to address issues that occurred during the event. Project partners will follow the NADO “Planning for a More Resilient Future: A Guide to Regional Approaches.” FISCAL IMPACT: No fiscal impact is associated with this item. GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There are no Growth Management Impacts associated with this Executive Summary. The Disaster Recovery Coordinator will assist in the ongoing efforts to fully recover from Hurricane Irma, particularly for the rural counties. This new coordinator will improve regional communication, identify State and Federal disaster assistance resources, and share best practices regarding recovery and resiliency. Southwest Florida will benefit as a region from this collaborative effort. Collier County values the opportunity to work with our sister counties to resolve shared concerns and achieve common goals.
