EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve a progress report related to the development of Big Corkscrew Island
Regional Park, and approve modification of proposed layout for the athletic fields in Phase I of the
project.
OBJECTIVE: To provide the Board of County Commissioners with a progress report for Big Corkscrew
Island Regional Park based on recent and ongoing public input.
CONSIDERATIONS: The Parks and Recreation Division held a public meeting on June 7, 2017 to
continue to gain input into the design of the Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park. Staff, in conjunction
with Q Grady Minor and Associates as well as Barth and Associates, delivered a presentation at the
meeting that included two possible configurations of the athletic fields in the first phase of the project.
One of the options (A) includes six multi-purpose fields similarly situated as depicted in the master plan
approved by the Board in February, 2016. The alternative option (B) includes four multipurpose fields
and two softball/baseball fields. A substantial majority of those attending favored option B. Subsequent to
the June meeting, the Parks and Recreation Division solicited members of the public via a blast e -mail
that included information regarding both options. The Division received a 90% approval rating for option
B.
The design consultants can add a dog park with the initial phase; however, consideration for sand
volleyball courts will be reviewed during the completion of Phase II design for the park.
The item was presented to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PARAB) on August 16, 2017 and
they recommended approval of the design 6-0.
Currently, the park construction documents are on schedule for completion by November 15, 2018. Key

FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact with this action.

Parks and Recreation Annual Updated Inventory Report (AUIR).
