The idea for a tape-based channel operation was born during a meeting between the County Government and School District focusing on the needed expansion of government access cable TV service to Jmmokalee. The meeting, held about one year ago, included myself, the general manager of Time Warner Cable and two Time Warner engineers, Collier County Government Cable Franchise Coordinator Doug Essman, and Collier County Government Public Information Officer Jean Merritt. I asked a "what if" question - "Since we have a cable channel available to us in Immokalee, 'what if' we were able to program the channel with a pre-recorded videotape system?" Returning to my office I posed the same question to our Instructional TV Specialist Linda Haslinger. She responded, "Why not?" She found the necessary equipment amidst our existing inventory and started the planning process to make it a reality. We put a 24/7 tape-based channel on the air in Immokalee in August of 2001. COLLIER COUNTY CHARACTER EDUCATION TRAITS Fairnea~ Honesty Kindne~ Pereeverence Reepect R~,ponaibility Self-Di~cipline THE COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IS AN EQUAL ACCESS / EQUAL OPPORTUNITY INSTITUTION FOR EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT Please see "The Education Channel" ]:mmokalee schedules provided: One version (color), showing an overview, and a more detailed version. Current School District Immokalee Channel System: The Immokalee channel was designed to be programmed with four VCR's, a broadcast controller, a character generator for the Bulletin Board, and various switchers and power supplies. .lustification for Cable TV siqnal expansion to ]:mmokalee: While the Collier County Public School District has the majority of its students, schools, and offices in the greater Naples area, there are 5,200 students in l~mmokalee. They attend five elementary schools, a charter school, middle school, high school, an adult center and several alternative programs that are located in ]:mmokalee. The parents of our Immokalee students are not afforded the same opportunities as parents who reside in the greater Naples area. Because we are not able to provide "live" cable TV access to the ]:mmokalee community, parents and interested community members living there are not able to view Naples-based School Board meetings and workshops as they occur. The extension of "live" cable television education access to ]:mmokalee would help connect the l:mmokalee community with Naples. The timely information that would be afforded to the school district's students and parents - regarding school events, possible weather-related school closings, and the live School Board telecasts - would help cement the connection between Naples and l~mmokalee.
