Agenda 06/13/2017 Item #16D 506/13/2017 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Recommendation to authorize a budget amendment to allow for an increase in the quantity of meals served for the 2017 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). OBJECTIVE: To provide nutritional breakfast and lunches during the summer for chil dren that are not able to go to the sites offered by the School Board. CONSIDERATIONS: On April 11, 2017, the Board of County Commissioners approved the Parks and Recreation Division to be a participant in the 2017 Summer Food Service Program (Item 16D7). The SFSP is grant funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service and administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture. The grant reimburses agencies that serve free meals to children eighteen years and under in neighborhoods that qualify. Neighborhood eligibility is determined by census income data or by the percentage of children who receive free and reduced meal service during the school year. Parks and Recreation staff was approached by a representative from Avalon Elementary in Naples with a request to provide meals at East Naples Community Park for their summer program participants. The organization is providing a Summer Camp program for 50 children. East Naples Community Park is considered an “open” meal site through the current grant agreement between Collier County and the Florida Department of Agriculture (FLDA). Under the current grant stipulations, staff is requesting additional funding to accommodate the request for additional meals. Based on the current e stimates, the 2017 SFSP will need an additional 1,950 breakfast and lunches. The cost of these meals will be reimbursed to the County through the Summer Food Service Program Grant Agreement with the Department of Agriculture. LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed as to form and legality and requires majority vote for approval. - CMG GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no growth management impact. FISCAL IMPACT: It is anticipated that the additional meals will cost $10,803 with a reimbursement from the Florida Department of Agriculture in the amount of $11,534.25 to cover the cost of the vended meals associated with the program. No additional local funding needs will be required within the MSTD General Fund (111) annual FY 17 operating budget associated with summer recreation camps. This brings the total of anticipated grant revenue to $116,412 for the 2017 SFSP.
