EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation for a Budget Amendment to request additional funds for the purchase of a
helicopter for the CCSO in the amount of $750,000.
OBJECTIVE: To obtain approval to increase current FY 17 operating fund budget by $750,000 for the
Collier County Sheriff’s Office.
CONSIDERATIONS: In light of recent significant fire incidents within Collier County, and in
anticipation of future incidents impacting public safety, the CCSO has identified the need to purchase an
additional helicopter. This helicopter would be used in support of county wide incidents such as the
recent fires as well as search and rescue efforts. Additionally, this helicopter will help support anticipated
increased law enforcement needs associated with overall growth in the county. A unique opportunity
exists to act in the best interest of the citizens of Collier County to purchase this asset, a Federal Surplus
reseller of helicopters. The request for $750,000 will cover the purchase of the aircraft, transportation to
Collier County, training, and safety equipment, including a bucket for aiding in fire suppression, new
hoist kit and an engine overhaul to extend the life to 10 years. Based on recent projections, our agency
will not have enough resources for this purchase during the current fiscal year. CCSO is requesting
additional funds to purchase this equipment.
FISCAL IMPACT: A budget amendment is needed in the amount of $750,000 to purchase an additional
helicopter.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: None
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, raises no legal
issue, and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners (1) approves the necessary budget
amendments.
