Backup Documents 04/25/2017 Item #16H1 16M ? 1b I PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, "A National Day of Prayer" was called for by the first Continental Congress in 1775 and was first established by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863; and, WHEREAS, in 1952, Congress unanimously voted to establish a National Day of Prayer. The day was made official when President Harry S. Truman signed it into law; and, WHEREAS, in 1988 Congress and President Ronald Reagan amended the low to designate the first Thursday in May as "National Day of Prayer"; and, WHEREAS, most of the National Day of Prayer efforts are geared at praying for the nation, government leaders, the President, Congressmen, and local officials. There are large gatherings on the Mall in Washington D.C. and in thousands of cities across America; and, WHEREAS, National Day of Prayer gives us an opportunity to come together as a community and pray for our community, our nation, and our world; and, WHEREAS, local events are held at the Collier County Courthouse steps at 12:00 noon and at the Golden Gate Community Center at 7:00 p.m., as well as an event in Everglades City. All are invited to attend. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that May 4, 2017, be designated as "National Prayer Day" DONE AND ORDERED THIS 25th Day of April, 2017.
