Agenda 03/28/2017 Item #16D 703/28/2017 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Recommendation to acknowledge April 21, 2017, as Try Transit Day and to authorize complimentary rides to all transit riders on that date. OBJECTIVE: To promote Public Transit as an alternate mode of transportation. CONSIDERATIONS: To raise awareness of public transit and encourage healthier lifestyles, Collier Area Transit (CAT) is reaching out to the traveling public who normally commute alone to suggest riding on CAT buses on Try Transit Day. Riding CAT reduces the number of vehicles on the roadways, thus reducing traffic congestion and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Also, walking or riding a bike to and from the bus stop improves health and physical fitness. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District One Office is co llaborating with public transit agencies within the region to encourage 100% participation in designating April 21, 2017 as “Try Transit Day”. With this designation FDOT is also encouraging transit agencies in the region to promote the use of public transit by adopting a proclamation for the day, offering free service and any other initiative that they believe would introduce the public to transit. Within the region FDOT has been able to get the following commitments from neighboring transit systems: • Lee County Transit (LeeTran): o Free rides on Try Transit Day o Proclamation - pending approval • Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT): o Free rides on Try Transit Day o Proclamation o Employer Commuter Awards Ceremony • Manatee County (MCAT): o Free rides on Try Transit Day o Proclamation • Charlotte County (Dial-A-Ride): o Free rides on Try Transit Day o Proclamation Complimentary rides provide a great opportunity to allow choice riders and residents of Collier County to experience the quality and professional services that Collier Area Transit offers. FISCAL IMPACT: If approved Staff estimates fare collection would be $2,600 in uncollected revenues for this event. LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to form and legality, and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no Growth Management Impact. RECOMMENDATION: To recognize April 21st, 2017, as Try Transit Day, and approve the provision of complimentary rides on that date.
