EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve the submittal of an EMS Matching Grant application to the Florida
Department of Health for the purchase of a Multifunctional Training System for Medflight crews
for a total of $7,519 (Match $1,880).

OBJECTIVE: To alleviate injuries to Medflight personnel and patients by providing a Multifunctional
Training System to increase strength, stamina, and stability to the crew.
CONSIDERATIONS: Each year the Florida Department of Health provides the opportunity for the
improvement and/or expansion of EMS services through a matching grant program. This year the grant
period runs from October 1, 2016 through February 1, 2017. The State EMS Matching Grant was
identified as a possible funding source to provide physical fitness equipment, improve general health, job
performance, and situational awareness; thus decreasing Worker's Compensation Claims/Injuries, lost
days and the expense associated with these injuries.
Collier County EMS Medflight covers a vast rural area with only two personnel on the aircraft; a request
for an additional unit to provide lifting assistance can take a considerable amount of time and delay
patient transport. This subjects Flight Medics to situations in which they may lift a load heavier than they
are safely capable, potentially injuring themselves, to ensure the patient’s condition is not compromised.
If awarded, this equipment would be purchased and placed in the Medflight hangar accessible to
Medflight crews.
FISCAL IMPACT: There is no Fiscal Impact at this time. The total funds requested for this project is
$7,519; $5,639 to be funded by the grant and a match of 25%, $1,880 to be funded by EMS Fund 490. If
awarded, staff will request Board acceptance at a future meeting.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item is approved for form and legality and requires a
majority vote for Board approval. - JAB
GROWTH IMPACT: There is no Growth Management Impact resulting from this action.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners approves the submittal of an EMS
Matching Grant application to fund the purchase of a Multifunctional Training System for EMS
Medflight crews.
