Agenda 01/24/2017 Item # 5A01/24/2017 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Recommendation to recognize Jake Sullivan, Supervisor-Park Rangers, Public Services Department as the 2016 Supervisor of the Year. OBJECTIVE: To recognize the efforts and accomplishments of an employee who has made significant contributions to the organization or to our community. The Supervisor of the Year was chosen by the Employee of the Month Committee from a pool of 10 nominees. CONSIDERATIONS: Jake Sullivan, Park Ranger Supervisor, Parks & Recreation, has been with the County since 2005 and works for the Public Services Department. As the Park Ranger Supervisor, Jake Sullivan actively leads, evaluates, supervises, directs, and guides all park rangers and booth attendants: 25 full and part-time direct reports, along with four job bank employees. Collectively, this staff is responsible for patrolling sixty-five parks throughout Collier County, compelling public compliance with all rules and ordinances, and collecting daily revenue from patrons visiting our beach parks. Despite his unquestionable job performance talent, it is Jake's leadership and supervisory skills that truly set him apart. He provides ample time, always without complaint, for all members of the park ranger service to attend all required and/or requested training. He strongly encourages rangers to come up with, and then “own” projects they are interested in pursuing. For example, within the last few months, Jake enthusiastically supported requests by rangers to apply directional arrows to the Clam Pass parking lot to facilitate traffic flow; to investigate the condition of and then rehab the signage at the Barefoot Beach canoe trail; and to purchase/install trail cameras at strategic locations throughout the parks system to deter criminal mischief, improving park facilities. Jake allotted the necessary time, oversight, and supplies, but remained “hands off” as the projects were being completed. On multiple occasions, when last-minute situations require either park rangers or park assistants to miss work, or during special events (Snowfest, Cinqo de Mayo, Fourth of July at Sugden Park) that require more rangers than are available, he has put himself into the schedule to either patrol parks or man the booths to collect funds, rather than asking someone else to do it. Jake is never above answering phones at the front desk when things get busy, or stepping in to assist front desk staff with customers should the need arise. By stepping up and being that great example, he again fosters loyalty among his staff which in turn results in enhanced system wide performance. Decisive and confident, he is always willing to go the extra mile to ensure excellent stewardship of our park system. Jake has significantly enhanced the reputation and professional credibility of the Park Ranger service. He has done so while simultaneously garnering enormous staff loyalty through his “tough but fair” approach. He is an “All Star” Supervisor and is exceptionally deserving of this award. FISCAL IMPACT: The selected “Supervisor of the Year” receives a $250.00 cash award. Funds for this are available in the Human Resources Budget for this program. GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There are no Growth Management Impacts associated with this Executive Summary.
