EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to officially name the intersection of Thomasson Drive and Bayshore Drive "Del's
Corner" and to provide signage so indicating with a naming ceremony at the time of installation.
OBJECTIVE: To recognize Del Ackerman who established his store, Del's 24, on the southeast corner
of Thomasson Drive and Bayshore Drive over 50 years ago and which exists there today.
CONSIDERATIONS: On December 6, 2016, Commissioner Taylor added an item to the
Bayshore/Gateway CRA Advisory Board agenda requesting that the intersection of Thomasson Drive and
Bayshore Drive be named Del's Corner and it was approved unanimously.
Del and Nancy Ackerman opened Del's 24 Hour Food Store 52 years ago and kept it open even through
hurricanes,rarely ever closing for more than a few hours.
Del Ackerman is a truly a Collier County pioneer and an extraordinary example of a small businessman
who has maintained his success for over 50 years.
FISCAL IMPACT: TBD
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There are no Growth Management Impacts associated with
this Executive Summary.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: The County Attorney has reviewed this item with staff. It is our
recoimnendation that if the Board is so inclined, that an historic marker or plaque be placed at the
intersection. If the marker or plaque is placed within the County right-of-way, no further action is
required. If the marker or plaque is placed on private property, an easement might be required. Should the
Board approve this item, staff will bring back a proposed marker or plaque with appropriate wording for
the Board's review, as well as recommend an appropriate and safe location for the marker or plaque at the
site. With that noted, this item is approved as to form and legality, requiring majority support for

RECOMMENDATION: That the Board approves the renaming of the intersection of Thomasson Drive
and Bayshore Drive "Del's Corner" and that signage will be provided so indicating with a naming
ceremony at the time of installation.
