Backup Documents 11/18/2014 Item # 4A 4A PROCLAMA TION WHEREAS, in 1989, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese approved a mission church in Collier County and the first Greek Orthodox Liturgy was celebrated; and, WHEREAS, in 1991, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese approved the charter for the new church and the church was named in patronage of St. Katherine of Mt. Sinai; and, WHEREAS, a community hall was built in 1993 to serve the spiritual and cultural needs of parishioners, while church construction typifying Hagia Sofia architecture began November 12, 2000 with the church opening on January 14, 2001; and, WHEREAS, over the past 22 years, a portion of the proceeds from the St. Katherine's Greek Festival has benefitted the Golisano Children's Hospital and the affiliated Barbara's Friends for children with cancer; and, WHEREAS, St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church supports Friends of the Developmentally Disabled by hosting a yearly barbecue, assists with Harry Chapin food distribution, holds a yearly Undie Sunday for children, and supports orphanages in New Zealand and Guatemala; and, WHEREAS, on March 29, 2014 St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church celebrated with their Burning of the Mortgage ceremony; and, WHEREAS, St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church is a strong community partner within Collier County, embracing fellowship, outreach, stewardship, and hospitality. NOW THEREFORE, be it proc/aimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida that November 25, 2014 be designated as St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church Day DONE AND ORDERED THIS 18th Day of November, 2014.
