PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, about 6,000 professional telecommunicators in Florida perform a critical function when an emergency occurs, requiring police, fire and ambulance services or those involving utilities, forestry and conservation, highway safety and maintenance; and, WHEREAS, telecommunicators — 911 call-takers, dispatchers, staff trainers, supervisors, managers, technicians and others — serve citizens daily by efficiently answering 911 calls and coordinating and dispatching appropriate assistance as quickly as possible; and, WHEREAS, public safety — and the safety of our officers and firefighters — is dependent upon the quality and accuracy of information obtained by the dispatcher, who provides radio, telephone and computer services; and, WHEREAS, dispatchers have exhibited vigilance, compassion, understanding and professionalism during the performance of their jobs, being the first and most critical contact residents have with emergency services; and, WHEREAS, telecommunicators are not as visible at an emergency scene, but are a critical link as part of the first-responder team, contributing to the apprehension of criminals, patient treatment and saving lives, and saving people and possessions from fires; and, WHEREAS, the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO), which represents more than 20,000 members worldwide, has set aside the second week in April to honor the men and women whose diligence and professionalism keep our county and citizens safe. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that April 10-16 be designated as: National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
