PROCLAMATION
/HEREAS, more than 1.6 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2016, including
more than 121,000 new cases in Florida, according to the American Cancer Society; and,
WHEREAS, Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention; and,
WHEREAS, the five year survival rate for all cancers diagnosed between 2005 and 2011 was 69
percent, up from 49 percent 30 years ago; and,
WHEREAS, the improvement of survival rates reflects the earlier diagnosis of some cancers and
improvements in treatment; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County has many organizations locally that work to he/p residents prevent and treat
cancer, as well as organizations that work to ease the burden that cancer can cause to
residents and their families; and,
WHEREAS, The Cancer Alliance of Naples (CAN) is one of those organizations that works to ease the
burden that cancer causes. In 2002, a group of volunteers saw the need to offer
assistance to cancer stricken families and individuals whose lives were turned upside down
financially and emotionally; and,
WHEREAS, CAN helps more than 125 families annually, including children of low-income single parents
in Collier County, and children with cancer referred from the Go/isano Children's Hospital.
CAN pays rent so cancer survivors and their families won't be evicted, utilities so they
won't be turned off, food for nourishment, car payments so they won't be repossessed and
gas to get to treatment. CAN provides these services while the patient is undergoing
chemotherapy or radiation; and,
WHEREAS, The Collier County Board of County Commissioners appreciates the work that organizations
like CAN do for the people of Collier County.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed that the Collier County Board of County Commissioners hereby
proclaims February 2016 as
CANCER PREVENTION MONTH
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 23rd Day of February 2016.
