Backup Documents 06/10/2014 Item # 4A 4A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Don Hunter began his career in law enforcement in 1979 with the Collier County Sheriff's Office; was elected Sheriff of Collier County in 1988, and served as Sheriff for 20-years, retiring in 2008 after deciding not to seek a fifth term; and WHEREAS, After Don retired from the Collier County Sheriff's Office, he continued to serve the people of Collier County as the Chief of the Marco Island Police Department, a position he retired from on June 2, 2014, thereby concluding 33-years of protecting and serving County residents and visitors; and WHEREAS, During his tenure as Sheriff, Don achieved the lowest crime rate ever previously achieved, obtained state and international accreditation for the Collier County Sheriff's Office, and initiated and operated the immigration enforcement program which was the model program for all others throughout the nation; a program that reduced the jail population, saved significant taxpayer dollars, and reduced victimization of residents and visitors; and WHEREAS, Don is highly regarded and respected by fellow law enforcement professionals throughout the state and nation; and WHEREAS, Don's legacy will endure long after his retirement, and the Board of County Commissioners and the people of Collier County are grateful for his devoted service and we wish Don and wife Melissa happiness. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida that a grateful Board 'recognizes and honors Don Hunter for 33-years of protecting and serving the residents and visitors of Collier County.
