PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, 2015 marks the 70th Anniversary of the end of WWII preserving our nation's founding
principles of 1776 and our citizen's inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness; and,
WHEREAS, the end of the war in Europe was announced on May 8, 1945 and in the Pacific on
August 14, 1945, in saluting Great Britain's support, a grateful State began welcoming
home liberty's heroes; and,
WHEREAS, When it mattered most, a generation of Americans showed their finest qualities of our
Nation and of humanity with more than 16 million Americans serving during World War
II, of which 248,000 were Floridians; and,
WHEREAS, Floridians contributed to the war effort with its Agriculture, Innovations and a Tourism
destination for hardworking, civilian workers and service men; and,
WHEREAS, Air Corps bases built in Nap/es and Immokalee for training gunners, bomber crews and
fighter pilots for combat was started in 1942 and were operational December 1943;
and,
WHEREAS, After World War II ended, military bases became civilian airports and affordable
education, due to the 61 Bill, contributed to the rapid postwar expansion of Florida's
higher education system; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County Citizens acknowledge the enduring "special relationship"between Americo
and Great Britain, and as such, Collier County Citizens pay tribute to those who fought
at home and abroad in WWII which helped ensure victory for our nation and prosperity
for Floridians and Collier County citizens from that day forth.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that the year 2015 be designated as
VICTORY FLORIDA YEAR
urging all Collier County Citizens, businesses, churches, museums and veterans organizations to
remember the 70th Anniversary of the End of World War II and honor our Greatest Generation
and their contributions abroad and on the home front during this extraordinary time in history.
