Backup Documents 03/25/2014 Item # 4C ` 4C PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, April 7th is the birthday of Majory Stoneman Douglas, one of the preeminent defenders and advocates for the Everglades; and, WHEREAS, in her honor, the Florida State Legislature has designated April 7, 2014 as Everglades Day; and, WHEREAS, Collier County contains a significant area of the Big Cypress Swamp and the Greater Everglades Ecosystem; and WHEREAS, Collier County has demonstrated its commitment and dedication to conservation and protection of our natural resources with over 800,000 acres of land in public ownership; and, WHEREAS, our natural environment is a major component of our quality of life and our economy in Collier County; and, WHEREAS, Collier County has many distinguished organizations, associations, and individuals dedicated to the preservation and responsible use of our environment and natural resources; and, WHEREAS, the citizens of Collier County wish to establish a time to recognize and educate the community on the issues facing the Everglades and to celebrate the uniqueness and beauty of this state treasure.
